Description
The Mechanical Designer combines responsibilities for mechanical design and detailed technical implementation within the engineering team. The incumbent contributes to both the development of new products and the maintenance and improvement of existing products. He/she serves as a key liaison between design, technical documentation, dimensional verification, validations, production, and quality, while ensuring strong consistency among 3D models, drawings, bills of materials, technical files, and manufacturing and regulatory requirements.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
MECHANICAL DESIGN
- Design and modify mechanical parts, components, subassemblies, and assemblies in 3D.
- Create mechanical designs that comply with technical, regulatory, and manufacturing requirements.
- Design functional, robust, and manufacturable assemblies.
- Participate in new product development, OEM projects, and technical changes to existing products.
- Propose improvements to manufacturability, assembly, tolerancing, and design robustness.
- Implement adjustments required following design reviews, testing, validations, or manufacturing feedback.
- Support the resolution of technical issues identified during design, testing, or production.
TECHNICAL DRAWINGS, GD&T, AND MECHANICAL DOCUMENTATION
- Produce complete technical drawings that comply with ASME Y14.5 requirements.
- Rigorously apply GD&T and functional dimensions.
- Prepare, review, and maintain views, sections, details, tolerances, technical notes, and bills of materials.
- Ensure consistency between 3D models, 2D drawings, revisions, and released documentation.
- Maintain high standards of clarity, usability, and quality in mechanical deliverables.
- Use SolidWorks and PDM tools in accordance with internal document management and release policies.
METROLOGY, INSPECTION, AND FAI
- Perform dimensional measurements of parts and assemblies.
- Use measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, comparators, and other applicable inspection tools appropriately.
- Prepare, perform, and document FAIs according to internal and regulatory requirements.
- Produce clear, complete, and traceable inspection reports.
- Identify, document, and report dimensional or documentation discrepancies.
- Recommend or support corrective actions related to inspection findings.
SUPPORT FOR TESTING, PROTOTYPES, AND VALIDATION
- Support verification tests and prototype reviews.
- Participate in the preparation of samples, assemblies, fixtures, or documents required for testing.
- Contribute to the technical verification of concepts, parts, and assemblies.
- Collaborate in the analysis of results and the integration of required adjustments into the design.
- Support product validations and releases in collaboration with other departments.
DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT, DMR/DHF/DHR AND TECHNICAL CHANGES
- Maintain technical documentation in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in the creation, updating, and maintenance of technical construction files.
- Support the document management of ECRs and ECOs.
- Ensure consistency between drawings, models, bills of materials, records, and technical documents.
- Document drawing defects, inconsistencies, and discrepancies in technical deliverables.
- Apply a rigorous review, release, and traceability discipline within the existing systems.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION AND MANUFACTURING SUPPORT
- Interact with Procurement, Production, Quality, PMO, R&D, and Suppliers.
- Support teams during product validations, transfers, releases, and field requirements.
- Actively participate in design reviews and cross-functional technical discussions.
- Respond to technical clarification requests from partner functions.
- Contribute to the smooth flow of information between Engineering and Operations.

Required Experience and Qualifications
- College diploma in mechanical engineering technology, industrial design with a strong aptitude for mechanical concepts, or a related field;
- Additional training in GD&T, metrology, or inspection is a significant asset.
- 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in mechanical design;
- Familiarity with SolidWorks and PDM required;
- Experience in FAI, dimensional inspection, or technical verification is a significant asset;
- Experience in a regulated environment, particularly medical, aerospace, or pharmaceutical, is a significant asset.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks for modeling mechanical assemblies and creating drawings;
- Excellent knowledge of ASME Y14.5 and geometric tolerances;
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes and manufacturing constraints;
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, GD&T, and production documents;
- Ability to perform FAI and prepare quality reports;
- Rigorous use of PDM tools and internal templates;
- Sound understanding of mechanical design, prototyping, and verification testing;
- Sound understanding of documentation requirements in a regulated environment.
